BACKGROUND STUDY

Scientists warn that global warming will have major impact on the world when 800 million people threatened by uncertain weather conditions, floods and famine. According to the Conference of the United Nations, some species of wild animals in the world also suffered the same fate, that of 25-40 percent of species will lose habitat by the year 2085.

In the year 2003, according to a study reported in the Journal of Environmental Science, a total of 80% of 1500 species of wild animals showing signs of stress on climate change, habitat course. Signs of climate change can be detected when the ecosystem habitat has MOVED quickly. The Plants Produce flowers before the beginning of spring, the bird make a nest before THEY fall due and insects appear before the season. Many natural phenomenon affect human life but the life of flora and fauna.

In fact, the climate and environment play an important role in the life of the earth. In a word, no matter Whether the light rain, heavy rain, extreme cold or heat will impact on human activities and wild animals.

According to the Body of Wildlife, there are species that have been adversely affected due to global warming. Among them include reindeer, Arctic fox, toads, Polar Bears, peguin, Gray Wolves, tree swallows and turtle.

According to Rustam Sciences professor from National University in the Lectures entitled "Culture of bump leakages and Human Nature" on May 26, 2010, states that the environmental destruction caused by Humans.

According to him, the world consists of a variety of habitats. Habitat is home to a community of organisms. A habitat is made up of an ecosystem, which is a combination of biotic and abiotic elements, Whether land, rivers, lait, forests, mountains and sky. All inter-related and in nature in balance.

Since first developed natural ecosystems, the world is a creation of quite hid, complex but well structured. Inside there are various subsystems that each one has its own function and interdependent. Nature continues to exist in balance until the recent era when people increasingly threatening environment due to changes in the way of life.

Research Question

1. WHAT IS GLOBAL WARMING IN MALAYSIA?

3. WHAT IS CAUSES THE GLOBAL WARMING IN MALAYSIA?

4. WHAT EFFECT OF GLOBAL WARMING IN

MALAYSIA?

SITI ROSLINA BINTI MAT DAUD & MOHAMAD BASIT BIN MOHD SHUKRI

DEFINITION of TERM:

There are many factors that can cause global warming such as the increases of sea level that effected by melting ice at the north pole. Moreover, greenhouses gases also may bring the worst effect that can contribute to global warming because it gases that release in the atmosphere that absorb and emit radiation within the thermal infrared range.

On the other hand, the society effect also bring a huge wave of global warming. Human activities that release heat-trapping gases and partical into the air can make global warming really happened. The examples of human activities that release a huge amount of global warming factors is pollution, trash burning, littering and transportation that release a lot of Carbon Monoxide into the air.

COSMIC APRIL/2009 : INTERVIEW. ( Environment activist Wong Tack, President of Sabah Environment Association (SEPA).

Q: How did you become involved in the environment move mean?
A: My childhood experience might be the key inference for my keen interest in environment. Coming from a farming family, our life was constantly in touch with land, climate and nature. My home was situated at the foothills of Titiwangsa main range in Pahang, with majestic mountains as a backdrop, crystal clear fast-running rivers pass trought the farms and streams that theme with all sort of life forms.
This early encounter with nature has difinitely instilled a deep sence of appreciation for its beauty. In my early adult life, I spent more then fifteen years in country which placed great importance in environmental protection and conservation-Canada, famous for its natural beauty. Many of its cities are recognised as among the most liveable in the world. Working as an environmental consultant there exposed me to a set of cocio-political beliefs that have great respect for environmental consultant there exposed me to a set od socio-political environment beliefs that have great respect for environment. Decision making on development often involves serious ecological consideration, a process that encourages active citizen participation.
My home coming in late-90s saddened me. The river that I spent most of the afternoon swimming after school has become laden with heavy sediments. The farm where I grew up has been flattened and stripped to bare land.the narrow dirt road that I walked to school  was plied trought with heavy logging trucks loaded with logs. At that moment, I decided that I had come back to this country and do something.

SEA LEVEL TO RISE 13cm IN A CENTURY

BY : SITI ROSLINA BINTI MAT DAUD (A127683).

New Straits Times, Jul 23, 2010

KUALA LUMPUR: Sea levels off the west coast of Peninsular Malaysia will rise by 10cm to 13cm in the next 100 years, the Dewan Negara was told yesterday.

Natural Resources and Environment Deputy Minister Tan Sri Joseph Kurup said the sea level at the west coast of Pulau Langkawi would rise by 10cm, while the sea off Tanjung Piai, Johor would go up by 13 cm.

He said these were the findings of study conducted by the Drainage and Irrigation Department in 2006.

"The rise in sea levels will not have a significant impact on the west coast of Peninsular Malaysia," he said in reply to a question from Senator Mohd Khalid Ahmad.

Kurup said 288.4km or six per cent of the country's 4,809km coastline was being eroded by the sea.

The erosion is placed under Category One, in which economic activities and property are under threat and immediate action must be taken to rectify the problem.

He said the ministry was implementing short-term and long-term measures to deal with the problem,

"Short-term measures include carrying out engineering work and construction of erosion control structures. So far, 140km of affected coastline has been rehabilitated.

"Among the rehabilitated areas are Kemaman beach, Terengganu, Kuala Sala Kecil and Kampung Kangkung, Yan, Kedah and the Miri - Kuala Baram coastline in Sarawak."

He said for the long-term, the Drainage and Irrigation Department had implemented a plan to prevent shoreline erosion from worsening.

GREENHOUSE EFFECT

BY : SITI ROSLINA BINTI MAT DAUD (A127683).

The "greenhouse effect" often gets a bad rap because of its association with global warming, but the truth is we couldn't live without it.

What Causes the Greenhouse Effect?

Life on earth depends on energy from the sun. About 30 percent of the sunlight that beams toward Earth is deflected by the outer atmosphere and scattered back into space. The rest reaches the planet's surface and is reflected upward again as a type of slow-moving energy called infrared radiation.

The heat caused by infrared radiation is absorbed by "greenhouse gases" such as water vapor, carbon dioxide, ozone and methane, which slows its escape from the atmosphere.

Although greenhouse gases make up only about 1 percent of the Earth's atmosphere, they regulate our climate by trapping heat and holding it in a kind of warm-air blanket that surrounds the planet.

This phenomenon is what scientists call the "greenhouse effect." Without it, scientists estimate that the average temperature on Earth would be colder by approximately 30 degrees Celsius (54 degrees Fahrenheit), far too cold to sustain our current ecosystem.

How Do Humans Contribute to the Greenhouse Effect?

While the greenhouse effect is an essential environmental prerequisite for life on Earth, there really can be too much of a good thing.

The problems begin when human activities distort and accelerate the natural process by creating more greenhouse gases in the atmosphere than are necessary to warm the planet to an ideal temperature.

• Burning natural gas, coal and oil -including gasoline for automobile engines-raises the level of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.

• Some farming practices and land-use changes increase the levels of methane and nitrous oxide.

• Many factories produce long-lasting industrial gases that do not occur naturally, yet contribute significantly to the enhanced greenhouse effect and "global warming" that is currently under way.

• Deforestation also contributes to global warming. Trees use carbon dioxide and give off oxygen in its place, which helps to create the optimal balance of gases in the atmosphere. As more forests are logged for timber or cut down to make way for farming, however, there are fewer trees to perform this critical function.

• Population growth is another factor in global warming, because as more people use fossil fuels for heat, transportation and manufacturing the level of greenhouse gases continues to increase. As more farming occurs to feed millions of new people, more greenhouse gases enter the atmosphere.

Ultimately, more greenhouse gases means more infrared radiation trapped and held, which gradually increases the temperature of the Earth's surface and the air in the lower atmosphere.

STEPS TO OVERCOME GLOBAL WARMING by SITI ROSLINA BINTI MAT DAUD

BY : SITI ROSLINA BINTI MAT DAUD (A127683)

1) Educate yourself about Global Warming then you will find it much easier to talk to others about it.

2) Recycle! A quarter of the population do not recycle at all. Recycling helps to reduce the use of landfills.

3) Use compact fluorescent bulbs. Not only does fluorescent bulbs helps you save money, but it is better for our environment as well.

4) Choose energy-efficient appliances when you buy new ones.

5) Buy a fuel efficient car. This will help you save money on gas and you will be saving the environment as well.

EFFECT : Fingerprints Of Global Warming On Wild Animals and Plants.

BY : SITI ROSLINA BINTI  MAT DAUD (A127683)

Over the past 100 years, the global average temperature has increased by approximately 0.6 °C and is projected to continue to rise at a rapid rate. Although species have responded to climatic changes throughout their evolutionary history, a primary concern for wild species and their ecosystems is this rapid rate of change. We gathered information on species and global warming from 143 studies for our meta-analyses. These analyses reveal a consistent temperature-related shift, or 'fingerprint', in species ranging from molluscs to mammals and from grasses to trees. Indeed, more than 80% of the species that show changes are shifting in the direction expected on the basis of known physiological constraints of species. Consequently, the balance of evidence from these studies strongly suggests that a significant impact of global warming is already discernible in animal and plant populations. The synergism of rapid temperature rise and other stresses, in particular habitat destruction, could easily disrupt the connectedness among species and lead to a reformulation of species communities, reflecting differential changes in species, and to numerous extirpations and possibly extinctions.

INTRODUCTION by SITI ROSLINA BINTI MAT DAUD

Environment is a sensitive and complex ecosystem because it has many influencing factors and is feeling the strain due to pollution, deforestration and construction.

Measurements of temperature taken by instruments all over the world, on land and at sea have revealed that during the 20th century the Earth’s surface and lowest part of the atmosphere warmed up on average by about 0.6°C. During this period, man-made emissions of greenhouse gases, including carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide have increased, largely as a result of the burning of fossil fuels for energy and transportation, and land use changes including deforestation for agriculture. In the last 20 years, concern has grown that these two phenomena are, at least in part, associated with each other. That is to say, global warming is now considered most probably to be due to the increases in greenhouse gas emissions and concurrent increases in atmospheric greenhouse gas concentrations, which have enhanced the Earth's natural greenhouse effect. Whilst other natural causes of climate change can cause global climate to change over similar periods of time, computer models demonstrate that in all probability there is a real discernible human influence on the global climate.

In Malaysia, people have felt the occurrence of weather fluctuation which leads to flooding.
Gelber said the average Malaysian is responsible for six tons of carbon emissions each year, due to fuel and electricity consumption.

“As consumers we are responsible for burning fuel and the use of electricity which creates CO2 and leads to global warming.

As global warming is caused by human beings we can take steps to prevent it. If you are a parent, leader or decision maker, you can set an example by changing your thinking and daily habits, which may take some effort in the beginning.

“One of the things you can do is to be aware of your own carbon footprint and see where we can reduce, or compensate by sponsoring tree planting and other environmental projects,

“For example the number of cars on the road have significantly increased our carbon footprint in the atmosphere. Alternatively you can use cars that are fuel efficient or use bio-fuel.”

There are more tips on how to adopt a green lifestyle to save our planet, including buying products that save energy and are more

Environmentally friendly.

  1. You can even start from your home by being energy efficient; switching off electronical appliances which are not in use, or replace old and faulty ones.
  2. We must believe we can do our part to prevent global warming and start by creating more awareness.

“To conclude, every little contribution counts. Too many people think they cannot make a difference, but when everybody do their part, we will make a huge difference,”
